Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.

Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as, at the height of the rainy season, more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred meters below.

The river’s annual flood season is February to May with a peak in April. The spray from the falls typically rises to a height of over 400 metres (1,300 ft), and sometimes even twice as high, and is visible from up to 50 km (30 miles) away.

During the flood season, however, it is impossible to see the foot of the falls and most of its face, and the walks along the cliff opposite it are in a constant shower and shrouded in mist. Close to the edge of the cliff, spray shoots upward like inverted rain, especially at Zambia’s Knife-Edge Bridge.

It’s a no brainer! You will be only one of 3 or so boats permitted on the river at night, and if you have any special dietary requirements, these can also be accommodated. White Water Rafting
Arguably the wildest white water in the world, rafting on the Zambezi River is an adrenaline rush not to be missed. The rapids on the Zambezi River are officially defined as “Grade 5” by the British Canoe Union (Grade 6 not being commercially run). Clients should be reasonably fit for this activity, as there is a steep walk into & out of the Batoka Gorge as well as the white water rafting activity itself. The gorge is over 100 meters deep at the Falls and increases to over 200 meters by the end of a full day raft trip. Despite this rugged terrain, the gorges below the Falls are thick with vegetation and incredibly spectacular.

Flying Fox
The adventure begins on a wooden platform, and with your heart racing and palms tingling, you can see the gaping mouth of the gorge and hear the roaring rapids below. With a harness secured, you take your first steps towards that feeling of flight. When your feet leave the platform, the harness turns you into a “superman position”, so that you are horizontally suspended as you whiz through the air. Any fear you may have felt before is whipped away in the wind as you soar between the lips of the gorge above breathtaking views. The gentle pace of the flying fox enables you to fully appreciate the vegetation that sprouts from the cracks in the rock and climb up the black basalt. The sounds of the rapids churning below mingle with the calls of the birds that fly at what is now eye level. The Flying Fox is perfect for those who crave a breathtaking view and the slightest adrenaline rush. This section of the gorge is 200 meters wide and 120 meters deep and more often than not, it whets your appetite for faster, more thrilling high wire activities.

Zip Line

Until recently, this was the longest Zip Line (Foofie Slide) ride in the world. Imagine the adrenalin rush travelling at a speed of 106 km’s per hour,  hurtling 425 m across the gorge, while suspended 120 m above the breathtaking beauty of the Zambezi water below.

Gorge Swing
Gorge Swing is a thrilling and mind-blowing experience. Leap into the wide-open air as you plunge into the mouth of the Batoka gorge, Victoria Falls. Scream as you break free of the fear and trepidation you felt before you threw yourself off the platform. Zero Gravity! It is amazing how the things that make our hearts skip a beat, are the things that make us feel most alive. If you have done the gorge swing, you know this better than anyone. Though the fall lasts three seconds, the memory of falling through open African air lasts a lifetime.

Victoria Falls Canopy Tour
Observe the riverine forest from a variety of different vantage points – from above, below and within the canopy itself. Experience forest birdlife, which can include the Knysna and Purple crested Turaco (Lourie) and Peregrine Falcons. The Victoria Falls Canopy Tour offers a network of slides, trails and rope bridge walkways within the canopy of the hardwood forest of the Zambezi gorges. This experience is suitable for adventure seekers of all ages including families and groups. This is family fun with a unique birds-eye view of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. There are 9 different zip lines to choose from, and although there is no view of the Falls, you have a stunning view of the magnificent bridge and the awesome surrounding gorge.

The Zambezi National Park plays host to a wide variety of larger mammals including African elephant, lion, Cape buffalo and leopard. In addition to these charismatic members of the “big 5” there are herds of sable antelope, common eland, common zebra, Southern giraffe, greater kudu, waterbuck and impala. In addition, many species of smaller wildlife can be seen here.

Over 400 species of birds have been recorded within the Zambezi National Park. Pel’s fishing owl, African skimmer, collared palm thrush, lanner falcon, goliath heron, African finfoot, rock pratincole and long-toed lapwing are considered to be among the speciality birds of the park. Aside from birds and land animals, there are 75 species of fish located in the park, including the famous tigerfish.
